"Back to 70s. Today's era is a dream" (The 1970s that I will never forget)
The 1970s marked a turning point in Japan's postwar high economic growth, a decade marked by significant shifts in social values and the lifestyles of young people. In the United States, the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the oil crisis shook the previous optimism; simultaneously, various non-traditional cultural movements, such as hippies, disco, punk, skateboarding, and surfing, flourished. In Japan, the Osaka World Expo, the entry of American companies into the Japanese market, and the debut of the "Made in USA Catalog" quickly ignited a yearning for culture across the ocean. As if in rebellion against war-weary adults, young people began incorporating their own versions of America into their daily lives through fashion, music, and leisure activities. In that turbulent era, social unrest and free expression coexisted, giving birth to lifestyle archetypes that continue to this day. If we trace the roots of the fashion, music, and leisure activities we enjoy today, we find that they all originated in the 1970s. Therefore, this special feature will look back at the 1970s and explore how it has influenced contemporary fashion and culture.
"70s Is Back"
The 1970s marked a turning point in Japan's post-war economic boom, a decade marked by significant shifts in societal values and the lifestyles of young people. In America, the Vietnam War, the Watergate Scandal and the oil crisis shook the previously optimistic mood, while a diverse range of unconventional cultures flourished, including hippies, disco, punk, skateboarding, and surfing. In Japan, events such as the Osaka World Expo, the entry of American companies into the Japanese market, and the emergence of the Made in USA Catalog fueled a rapid increase in longing for cultures from across the ocean. As if rebelling against adults who had experienced war, young people began to incorporate their own version of America into their daily lives through fashion, music and leisure. This turbulent era saw the coexistence of social anxiety and free expression, giving rise to the prototypes of lifestyles that continue to this day. If we trace the roots of the fashion, music, and leisure activities we enjoy today, we find them in the 70s. Therefore, in this cover story, we look back at the 70s and explore how it has influenced contemporary fashion and culture.
