SHOE, SERVICE, REVERSE UPPER,
COMPOSITION SOLE Type M-43
These Type M-43 service shoes are reproduced by "Buzz Rickson's", based on vintage. The U.S. Army's M-43 service shoes, known as Type III and featuring rough side out (suede side) leather, were adopted in 1943. The previous M-42 Type II model used smooth leather with the grain side out. Type III's design, with the grain side inward, allowed for easier foot insertion and superior comfort. Additionally, permeable wax treatment enhanced the leather's preservation and waterproofing. Changes in specifications included the removal of the toe cap found in M-42 Type II for better fit and mobility, and a transition from half-rubber soles to full soles for improved waterproofing and strength. There were early and late versions of M-43 Type III; the early version had rivets on the ends of the eyelet stays, while the late version, post-1944, omitted these rivets. Widely used across all combat zones, including the fierce European fronts during WWII, these shoes were also favored by pilots and crew as flying shoes. The M-43 service shoes gained widespread recognition after being worn by Steve McQueen's character Virgil Hilts in the movie "The Great Escape," paired with the A-2 jacket, cementing their enduring popularity.
